It’s been a busy few weeks in the orchard, in spite of the cold and wet and there’s more to come in the New Year!
Work to incorporate our new plot into the existing orchard has begun with the removal of a substantial part of the old cypress hedge which divided the two areas and plans for acquiring and planting new fruit trees in the extension are well under way. The orchard will soon be almost twice its original size! Together with children from West Jesmond Primary School and with the co-operation of the City Council, we’ve also planted several young trees in the Cemetery.
• Our Wassailing, featuring a visit from the Green Man and guest appearances by Jesmond Sings and the Elderly Brothers, will take place on Saturday 7 January at 2.00;
• There’ll be a showing of Jesmond Community Orchard: the Movie on Thursday 19 January at 4.30 at Holy Name Parish Hall, Towers Avenue, NE2 3XJ;
• Our ever-popular annual grafting courses will take place on Saturday 25 February and Saturday 11 March, 9.30 – 13.00, at Holy Name Parish Hall. For further information, or to book your place, contact fionakclarke@yahoo.co,uk or phone 0191 2810758.
